Dick Riley and South Carolina Adjutant General T. Eston Marchant announced the APACHE unit would be coming to South Carolina.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3749\" src=\"https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1986-0228-0001a-171x300.jpg\" alt=\"1986 0228 - 0001a\" width=\"171\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1986-0228-0001a-171x300.jpg 171w, https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1986-0228-0001a-768x1350.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1986-0228-0001a-582x1024.jpg 582w, https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1986-0228-0001a-624x1097.jpg 624w, https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1986-0228-0001a.jpg 890w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 171px) 100vw, 171px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2 Oct 1986 \u2013 Troop D, 1st Squadron, 101st Cavalry was reorganized as 51st Aviation Battalion (Attack Helicopter).\u00a0 This meant South Carolina would have the second of three Army National Guard APACHE battalions.\u00a0 Also, this reorganization\u00a0meant the transition would be straight from UH-1M gunships and UH-1H\u2019s to AH-64A\u2019s and UH-60A\u2019s.\u00a0 The other two battalions were flying Cobras\u00a0 before transitioning to the APACHE\u00a0\u00a0This type transition would be a first of\u00a0a kind for the National Guard and generated lots of MOS\u00a0and pilot transition training.\u00a0 Even though Troop D had 125% strength at the time the increase in authorized personnel was quickly overcome by cross level slotting troop personnel as well as other South Carolina guard units.\u00a0 .\u00a0 Slotting of personnel from Troop D was not very difficult because if you were to look at the Troop MTOE it looked somewhat like a mini battalion.\u00a0 There was a HQS Platoon, a Recon Platoon, a Gun Platoon, an Observation Platoon, and a Maintenance Platoon.\u00a0 The 51st Aviation Battalion\u00a0came with\u00a0a Headquarters and Service\u00a0Company and\u00a0three Attack Companies.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Training for the new attack helicopter mission began immediately.\u00a0 During Annual Training of 1987 at Travis Air National Guard Base the staff sections and the companies exercised every aspect of the training doctrine as possible using on hand assets including the UH-1H\u2019s and UH-1M\u2019s.\u00a0 To get to AT the unit still had to borrow trucks, radios, and other commonly used equipment.\u00a0 This borrowing ended as the unit priority changed.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 By the end of AT, lots of class dates for MOS reclassification and Q course transition training were being received.\u00a0 In fact some personnel were in school by this time.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-3963\" src=\"https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-0517-Battalion-T-shirt-0001-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-0517-Battalion-T-shirt-0001-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-0517-Battalion-T-shirt-0001-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-0517-Battalion-T-shirt-0001.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/scarngavpicthistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017-0517-Battalion-T-shirt-0001-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Boyd Davis printed T-Shirts with this logo on the front.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 LTC Mark V. Rhett was the first Commander of the new battalion while\u00a0CSM Carlyle Wood was the first Command Sergeant Major.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1987 1201 \u2013 51st Aviation Battalion (Attack Helicopter) was re-designated\u00a0as 1st Battalion, 15st Aviation (Attack Helicopter)\u00a0to be in alignment with\u00a0the regimental system.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1986 0228 \u2013 Gov.
